The Acharya Varahamihira was the greatest Indian astrologer and astronomer, who was among the 9 Gems (Navaratna) in the court of legendry King Vikramaditya of Ujjan who begin the Vikram Samata era in 57 BC. As per the Brihat Samhita, written by Acharya Varahamihira the Nakshatra Ashlesha rules Vanga’s i.e. West Bengal and Bangladesh as a whole. As per the popular Avakahada Chaka system which we use in our Panchan’s (almanac) the Mrigasira 3 (third part) is allocated to Calcutta now Kolkata city.
Gemini sign and Major event in Bengal Region
Dr. B.V. Raman has given Gemini sign to West Bengal in his article written in the November 1946 issue of the astrological magazine. On the day of ‘Great Calcutta Killings’ 16 August 1946 (Direct Action Day) the transit Saturn was in Cancer and Rahu was in Taurus. Both Saturn and Rahu had then hemmed between them the ruling sign of Bengal which is Gemini. Mars the planet of violence was in the 4th house from Gemini the ruling sign of Bengal showing major massacre then in which thousands of innocent Hindus were died in targeted killing by Muslim Jihadi’s.
If we see in the historical context the second partition of Bengal happen on 15th of August 1947 when Eastern Parts of this region had become ‘East Pakistan’ (now Bangladesh). On the day of 15th of August 1947, the transiting Saturn was in Cancer in Ashlesha Nakshatra which is the Nakshatra which Acharya Varahamihira had allocated to Bengal in his Brihat Samhita.
Second major event in this region happened in the last century on the 16th of December 1971, when East Pakistan was liberated by the Indian forces and Bangla ‘Mukti Bahini’ combine efforts giving a humiliating defeated to Pakistan’s army mostly comprising of Punjabi and Pathan Muslim’s then. A new nation Bangladesh came into existence while millions of refugees also came from this region to India during the war of 1971 between India and Pakistan then. The transit Saturn was in Taurus then giving its 3rd aspect to the Cancer sign signifying the eastern parts of ancient Bengal region.
Major Political Events in West Bengal
The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], came to power in West Bengal in June 1977 ending the 30 year long rule of Congress Party since independent. In June 1977 the transit Saturn was in Cancer in Ashlesha Nakshatra the sign allocated to Bengal by Acharya Varahamihira.
On the 1st of January 1998 (at 11:00 a.m. at Calcutta) Mamata Banerjee formed a new party (Trinmoola Congress Party) after splitting from Congress (I) then. It was a major political event in West Bengal at that time. The transiting Saturn was in Pisces then in the 10th house from Gemini the ruling sign of West Bengal especially the Calcutta region. Mars and Jupiter were in Capricorn in the 8th house from the Gemini.
In May 2011 the Trinmoola Congress Party (TMC) defeated the left parties alliance ending their 34 year long communist rule in the state. At the time of May 2011 West Bengal elections transit Saturn was in Virgo giving its 7th aspect to the sign Pisces which is the 10th house of power from the Gemini the ruling sign of Bengal region. The transiting Jupiter was in Pisces in April-May 2011 when elections were held.
In year 2021 during the COVID time West Bengal was undergoing elections in April month. Mamata Banerjee won for the 3rd consecutive time but then BJP emerged as the major opposition party in the state for the first time. At that time the transiting Saturn was in Capricorn giving its 3rd aspect to the Pisces which is the 10th house of power from the Gemini the ruling sign of West Bengal.
Interestingly this year when BJP has ended the 15-year long rule of Trinmoola Congress Party (TMC) in West Bengal state when the transiting Saturn is in Pisces in the 10th house from the ruling sign of West Bengal. And the transiting Jupiter is in Gemini sign only.
Some future indications about West Bengal and Bangladesh Region
During 2nd of August to 18th of September in 2026 the transiting Mars will be in Gemini sign making a square (Kendra influence) with Saturn transiting in Pisces. This period will be sensitive for West Bengal state due to some troubles for the government after a major flood and some political violence in some areas. Jupiter transiting in Cancer a watery sign and giving its 9th aspect to Saturn which is also transiting from Pisces another watery sign indicate inundation after having rainfall in some of the eastern region of the country particularly Assam, West Bengal and also in parts of Bangladesh during the months of August and September this year.

During the transit of Mars from 18th of September to 12th of November 2026 in Cancer and then again in the same sign Cancer from the 10th of January 2027 to 1st of April 2027 in retrograde, and then direction motion some inauspicious events will take place in Bangladesh which is ruled by zodiac sign Cancer. The long stay of Mars in Cancer during September 2026 to March 2027 is not good for India and Bangladesh relations. Also, there will be major political tensions, law and order issues and political upheavals in the West Bengal state and its surrounding areas during this period.
