The Chapter number II and Pada IV of Jaimini Sutram starts with Sloka’s about Dvara Rashi and Bahya Rashi calculation methods. The sign who’s Dasha is being consider is called Dvara Rashi, and the sign who is as many sign as the Dvara Rashi is from the Janma lagna is called Bahya Rashi. The planets placed and giving aspect to these Dvara and Bahya Rashi are given importance when the results of the Jamini Rashi Dasha’s are delineated especially in case of Jaimini Chara Dasha and also Trikona Dasha. The Trikona Dasha find mentioned in the Chapter II and Pada IV Sutra number 24 , and the next Sutra to it is about considering results from that Dvara and Bahya Rashi’s.
A little more detail discussion about Trkona Dasha we get in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra Chapter number 47 in Sloka number 132 and 133. There the Sage Parashara instruct to calculate Trikona Dasha from the strongest of the sign from lagna, 5th or the 9th houses. The calculation is to be done just like Chara Dasha is what this Sloka instruct.
The most comprehensive and accurate method of calculating Trikona Dasha is given in the classical text ‘Dasha Phala Darpana’ by Pandit Shrinivas Sharma Pathak who was the son of Pandit Mahadev Pathak of Ratlam Madhya Pradesh the great author of classical text ‘Jataka Tattwam’. In the chapter number 2nd named Dashayanan Adhyay sloka number 203 to 211 in about 9 Sloka’s the author Pandit Shrinivas Sharma has explained in length the method to calculate the Trikona Dasha and its uses in Phalit (Prediction).
I first came to know about the correct method of calculation of this Dasha back in 2011 when my teacher Mr. Naval Singh showed me an old article of out teacher Shri K.N. Rao published in the late 1980’s in ‘The Astrological Magazine’ of Dr. B.V. Raman. In that article Rao Sir had given calculation of Trikona Dasha on a horoscope where 4 planets were in the 9th house.
Applicability: It is a conditional dasha of Jaimini and is applicable to the horoscope having 4 or more planets are in the lagna, 5th or 9th house which means the trine houses has maximum planets.
Rahu and Ketu (nodes) are shadow planets so we consider only 7 planets to identify the horoscope where Trikona Dasha has to be applied just like we do in case of Mandooka Dasha which is applicable when 4 or more planets are in Kendra (square).
Dasha starting point: The Dasha will start from the strongest of the lagna or 5th or 9th house. The house having more number of planets between these will be the starting point of the Dasha. But in case there are equal number of planets in any of the two trines, then we will have to check the strength of the Rashi. The dual sign is the strongest followed by the fixed and then the movable which is least stronger.
Order of dasha: The order of Dasha will be same as the Chara Dasha. From the start of Dasha Rashi see the ninth house Rashi. If it is a Savaya Rashi ( 1, 2 ,3 , 7, 8 and 9) then Dasha order will be direct. If it is a Apa Savaya Rashi ( 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12) than order of Dasha will be indirect.
The special rule should be followed to calculate the Dasha of Aquarius and Scorpio as we do in case of Jaimini Chara Dasha.
The Anter Dasha order will be same as the Maha Dasha cycle. The first Anter Dasha will be of the Maha Dasha Rashi only.
But remember one point Dasha will jump from Trine to Trine.
For example . If the starting point is Aries : Aries, Leo , Sagittarius, Taurus , Virgo , Capricorn , Gemini, Libra, Aquarius, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
If the starting point is Taurus: Taurus , Capricorn, Virgo, Aries, Sagittarius, Leo , Pisces , Scorpio, Cancer, Aquarius, Libra and Gemini.

Karakamsha lagna: Cancer
Pada Lagna: Gemini
Upa Pada : Cancer
Gulika : Aries

The horoscope to illustrate the calculation of Trikona Dasha of Jaimini we are taking of the famous mystic, guru and enlightened soul of 19th century Swami Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. He was perhaps the only well know Guru who practiced various spiritual techniques and traditions like Vaishnavism, Tantrik Shaktisam, Advait Vedanta, Sufism and Christian Sadhana one after another. He also molded 16 monastic disciples who spread his spiritual message to the entire world by forming various societies.
Swami Ramakrishna Paramhamsa was born as Gadadhar (childhood name) in Kamarpukar West Bengal (then Bengal Presidency of British India) on 18th of February 1836, at 06:45 a.m. in the morning. He was the fourth and the youngest child of his parents. His father Khudiram Chattopadhyaya (born 1775) and mother Chandramani Devi (born in 1791) were from poor and pious Brahmin family who use to worship Bhagwan Rama as their family deity in Vaishnav tradition.
As a child Gadadhar was initiated into spiritual tradition of the family through religious scriptures, discourses, plays and songs etc.
Jaimini Yoga’s for Spiritual Bliss
From the perspective of Jaimini astrology the horoscope of Swami Ramakrishna Pramahamsa (chart 1) has a strong yoga of 5th lord Mercury and the Amatayakaraka Moon in the ascendant along with the Sun which is significant of soul. These planets are in the fixed sign in Aquarius and they are getting the Jaimini aspect of Putrakaraka Saturn which is exalted in the 9th house of religion. The 5th house from the lagna has Jupiter the natural ‘Dharma Karaka’ in mutual Jaimini aspect with Venus which is the planet of devotion (Bhakti) as it is unaffiliated here.
Karakamasha lagna is Cancer the 12th from which as Jupiter a natural benefic getting Jaimini aspect of an exalted Venus which as per Jaimini Sutram is a yoga for enlightenment. Amatayakaraka the Moon is in Navamsha of Aries which when we see in the birth chart is also good as the 12th house from it has only natural benefic influences.
Jupiter in the 5th house from Janma lagna getting the Jaimini aspect of an exalted Venus gave him famous disciples. Also see the 5th house from his Karakamasha lagna Cancer where Ketu is placed getting Jaimini aspect by an exalted Mars explain his illustrious chain of disciples like Swami Vivekananda, Swami Brahmananda, Swami Shivananda, Swami Saradananda, Swami Akhandananda, Swami Turiyananda, Swami Tirgunatetananda, Swami Adhbutananda, Swami Yogananda, Swami Subhodananda and many more.
Starting Point of Trikona Dasha
In the birth chart of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa 3 planets are in the Janma lagna and one each are in the 5th and 9th houses respectively. Thus, the trine houses (1,5 and 9) having 5 planets, which make this chart a case for applying Trikon Dasha.
The Trikona Dasha will start from the Janma lagna Rashi Aquarius as it has 3 planets more than any other in the trine houses. The 9th house from starting point of Dasha has sign Libra which is a Savya Rashi i.e. direct group sign. Thus, the Dasha order will be direct only. The Dasha will move from Trine to Trine, thus Aquarius will be followed by Gemini, then Libra, then Pisces, then Cancer, then Scorpio, then Aries, then Leo…..and so on.
Calculation of Dasha years
The Dasha years for each Rashi shall be calculated in the same matter as we do in case of Jaimini Chara Dasha by K.N. Rao method. We will not add one year for exalted planet nor we deduct one year for a debilitated planet in counting number of years of Dasha for Rashi.
Aquarius…………….from February 1836 to February 1840
Gemini………………from February 1840 to February 1848
Libra…………………from February 1848 to February 1853
Pisces……………….from February 1853 to February 1862
Cancer……………..from February 1862 to February 1867
Scorpio…………….from February 1867 to February 1869
Aries………………..from February 1869 to February 1878
Leo………………….from February 1878 to February 1884
Taurus……………..from February 1884 to February 1894
Now we will study some of the major events in the life of Swami Ramakrishna Paramhamsa using Trikona Dasha of Jaimini system.
Early death of Father
He lost his father early when he was only 7 years of age. The Sun the natural karaka for father is in its enemy sign in the lagna with the 8th lord Mercury and 6th lord the Moon. Notice the Jaimini aspect of Rahu on the 9th house where Saturn is placed. Pada lagna is Gemini from where the 9th house has the Sun afflicted by the Jaimini aspect of a natural malefic Saturn. The 9th Pada is in Leo which get the Jaimini aspect of natural malefic planets Mars and Saturn both. These yoga’s shows early death of his father. The Trikona Dasha was of Gemini from where the 9th house has the Sun along with Bhatrikaraka Mercury.
During this Trikona Dasha of Gemini he use to go into trance after having the feeling of deep vairagya (asceticism) after the death of his father. See the placement of Putrakaraka Saturn in the 5th house from Gemini Rashi who’s Dasha was running then.
Dakshineshwar Temple Priesthood
In year 1852 Swami Ramakrishna moved to Calcutta along with his elder brother Ramkumar who had started a Sanskrit school there and was also working as a priest to support his family. It was the Trikona Dasha of Libra which is the 9th house (temples) having Putrakaraka Saturn. Matrikaraka (house) Jupiter aspect the 12th house from Libra. The 4th lord Venus also aspect the 12th house from Libra. The 4th Pada is in the 4th from the Dasha Rashi Libra explain this major residence shift.
Later during the Pisces Trikona Dasha Swami Ramakrisha arrived at newly build Dakshineshwar Kali temple where his brother Ramkumar was appointed as chief priest. This newly build temple was consecrated on May 31, 1855 by Ramkumar and his younger brother Ramakrishna who was helping him in his duties as chief priest. Pisces Dasha and Aries Anter Dasha was running in May 1855 when Swami Ramakrishna assisted his elder brother Ramkumar in consecration of Dakshineswar Kali Mandir of Calcutta. The 10th Pada is in Pisces and the 9th house from it is also very powerful.
Death of elder brother
See the 12th house from Dasha Rashi Pisces which has Bhatrikaraka Mercury. The 11th house (elder brother) has Atamakaraka Mars getting Jaimini aspect of Rahu. The elder brother of Ramakrishna died in 1856 and the responsibility of chief priest fell upon him. Following his brothers death Ramakrishna Pramahamsa again goes into the state of deep trance having luminous bliss and visions of goddess Kali.
It was during this Trikona Dasha of Pisces Bhairavi Brahmini (or Ma Yogeshwari) made him practice 64 Tantra rituals which Ramakrishna did during 1861 to 1863. See the Pisces has Venus which gave him a female Guru who made him practice Tantra techniques during this Dasha period. The Anter Dasha’s were of Libra and also Aquarius when he learned Tantra under the guidance of Bhairavi.
Marriage to Sarada Devi
When Swami Ramakrishna was 23 years of age in 1859 he was married to Sarada Devi (born 1853) age 5 then. It was child marriage ritual only which was very conmen in Bengal region of India in 19th century then. After marriage Sarada Devi moved back to her parents home and joined Ramakrishna in Dakshineshwar when she was 18 years of age only. By the time when Sarada Devi joined Ramakrishna he was 32 years of age and had become a very influential figure in spiritual world in that region.
Meeting Vaishnav Guru Jatadhari
In year 1864 when Swami Ramakrishna was passing under the Trikona Dasha of Cancer a great Vaishnava Guru Jatadhari came with his idol of Bhagwan Rama. He initiated Ramakrishna into various manifestation of Bhakti ; Dasya (servant-master relation between devotee and the Lord), Sakhya (like a friend with the Lord), Vaatsalya (loving the God as a child), Shanta (enjoying inner peace alone) and Madhura (that of a lover like devotion towards God). From Cancer the 9th house has Venus getting the Jaimini aspect of its sign lord Jupiter. The Cancer is the sign of the Karakamasha lagna in the horoscope of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.
Earlier Dasha of Pisces when Ramakrishna was practicing Tantra had Ketu in the 9th house getting the aspect of Mars its sign lord. Now in Cancer Trikona Dasha he shifted from Tantra to pure Vaishnavisam with great ease due to the exceptional strength of his horoscope.
Advait Guru Totapuri
In late 1864 a great Pramahamsa Yogi Tota Puri arrived at the grounds of Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. It is said that Tota Puri was a Advait Guru with forty years of Serious Tapsya and a profound scholar of highest spiritual tradition. He initiated Ramakrishna into philosophy of Advait Vedanta so that he can attain Nirvikalp Samadhi. The powerful initiation of Tota Puri made Ramakrishna remained in Samadhi for more than 3 days. It was this 9 months period in the life of Ramakrishna under the spiritual guidance of Tota Puri, which made him what he became later. In Trikona Dasha the period of Cancer Dasha and Aries Anter Dasha was running when Ramakrishna met Tota Puri.
Towards the end of 1866 Ramakrishna Pramahamsa was initiated into Sufi Islam Sadhana by a Hindu Guru Govinda Ray.
Meeting core group of young disciples
Swami Ramakrishna met his core group of young disciples individually between 1881 to 1886- including Swami Vivekananda who first met him in November 1881 when he was 18 years old. Just a few months before taking Maha Samadahi (leaving the mortal world) Swami Ramakrishna Pramahamsa gave the sacred cloth of renunciation to twelve of his close disciples in January 1886.
In the Trikona Dasha of Leo (1878 to 1884) he me some of his young disciples. Leo get the Jaimini aspect of Putrakaraka Saturn and also the 5th Pada which is in Libra.
Last days of Swami Ramakrishna Pramahamsa
The next Dasha of Taurus, which started in February 1884, proved very bad for the health of Swami Ramkrishna Pramahamsa. Taurus has Rahu getting the Jaimini aspect of Atamakaraka Mars and also Putrakaraka Saturn. Notice that Taurus is 4th sign from the Janma lagna Aquarius. The 4th from it is Leo which is Bahya Rashi for this Dasha of Taurus. The Dvara Rashi Taurus has malefic Rahu getting the Jaimini aspect of two natural malefic Mars and Saturn. The Bahya Rashi for it is Leo, counting as many as sign the Dvara Rashi is away from Janma lagna, which also get the Jaimini aspect of Mars and Saturn both. There is no benefic aspect on the Dvara Rashi, who’s Dasha is running, Taurus and its Bahya Rashi Leo so it has to prove very fatal for him.
In the beginning of 1885 Ramakrishna suffered from clergyman’s throat, which gradually developed into throat cancer. The condition of the Ramakrishna Pramahamsa worsen and he was then he was relocated to a large garden house at Cossipore on 11 December 1885. He took Mahasamadhi in the early morning hours of 16 August 1886 in the same place. It was the Trikona Dasha of Taurus and Anter Dasha of Capricorn (from 18 October 1885 to 18 August 1886) when Ramakrishna Paramahamsa left this mortal world. The Anter Dasha Rashi Capricorn has his Atamakaraka Mars and it get the aspect of Rahu. It is the 7th house, a Maraka Bhava, from his Karakamasha lagna and 8th from his Pada lagna.
But since Taurus has natural benefic Jupiter in the 2nd house and another natural benefic Venus in the 11th, without any obstructing Argala to both, so the death during this Dasha shows final emancipation or Moksha.
The monastic linage of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa gave birth to twin organizations Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission both headquarter at Belur Math near Calcutta.
