After the annexation of Goa in 1961 it become a union territory. Indian armed forces successfully drove away the Portuguese army in 36 hours operation on 17-19 December 1961 thus ending 451 years of rules of the Portugal over Goa, Daman and Diu territories. In 1987 Goa got the full statehood while Daman and Diu remained as union territory only. Since full statehood Congress Party was dominating Goa until BJP’s charismatic leader Manohar Parrikar defeated them in 2012 state assembly elections. Earlier also Manohar Parikar was chief minister of the state from October 2000 to February 2005. At present Pramod Sawant of BJP is the current chief minister of the state and he will be eying onto another election victory in the upcoming assembly elections in February 2027.
