Possible trends of North-East Monsoon in 2016

September 25, 2016 By Sachin Malhotra

A great deal of effort by the meteorologist within the country and abroad has gone into understanding the south-west monsoon, which provides nearly 80 per cent of India’s countrywide rainfall. The north-east monsoon has, by contrast, been far less studied. In astro-meteorology section of Mundane astrology (Medini Jyotish), one can find lots of discussion about the forecasting of rain for the south-west monsoon season (June-September) but not many astrologers deal with the phenomena of the north-east monsoon, which is also very important for many parts of the southern India as this region get considerable rain from the north-east monsoon during the months of October-November-December every year.

As the south-west monsoon season (June to September) draws to close, the direction of the surface winds starts changing and the stage is set for the north-east monsoon in the month of October. The winds coming from the south-westerly direction, during the south-west monsoon season, start blowing from the north-east direction. While traveling towards the Indian Ocean, the dry cold winds pick up some moisture from the Bay of Bengal and pour it over the southern-peninsular of India and parts of Sri Lanka. The state of Tamil Nadu, in particular, typically gets nearly half of its annual rainfall from this north-east or retreating monsoon season during the months of October to December every year. As per a research paper published in the Indian Meteorological Departments journal ‘Mausam’ , the normal date for this change in wind direction was October 15. During the same period of one hundred years, the monsoon’s onset happened between October 4 and November 11, with the normal date for onset being October 20.

This  year the Jupiter transiting from Virgo, a sign signifying south-direction, is giving an indication for excess rainfall again during the coming north-east monsoon season.

Due to the conjunction of transiting Jupiter and Mercury in the second week of October the north-east monsoon may set in earlier then its expected dates. Favorable conditions will start developing for an early onset of north-east monsoon in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka. Around the full Moon day of 16th of October there will be very good rainfall in these areas.

Full Moon

On the day of Full Moon of 16th of October the Moon is in watery rashi Pisces. The Venus, which is also a watery planet, is in Scorpio rashi. In Navamsha the Moon and Venus are together in Scorpio which is a good indication of heavy rainfall. During the third week of October there will be very heavy rainfall activity in the southern peninsular of India. Later on the 21st of October the Mercury will move into Libra to join Sun. The Venus and Saturn transiting ahead of Mercury will give lots of wind in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Mars in Capricorn and heavy rainfall

In the first fortnight of November the rainfall activity will increase when Mars will move into Capricorn on the 2nd of November. In astro-meteorology the Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are watery signs. The entry of planets into these signs brings intense rainfall activity particularly when they are under the aspect of Jupiter. The Jupiter transiting from Virgo will be giving aspect to the Mars in Capricorn then. This combination will bring very heavy rainfall in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during the second fortnight of November. The cities of Chennai, Pondicherry, Bengaluru, Hyderabad etc. will receive very heavy rainfall immediately after the entry of Mars in Makar on the 2nd of November.

There is also danger of windstorm and cyclones in the southern peninsular particularly around 2nd of November and on the day of Full Moon of 14th of November.

Sun in Scorpio and increased rainfall activity

The entry of Sun into Scorpio on November 16th will increase the rainfall activity all of a sudden. This will happen due to Sun’s conjunction will Saturn in Scorpio sign. The conjunction of Sun and Saturn gives extreme weather activity as per the season. The Sun will also be conjoined with Mercury in the same sign then.

Solar Ingress of Scorpio

16 November 2016 at 06:17 hours , Delhi

As per Varahamihira the chart cast at the time of solar ingress of Scorpio gives indication about winter harvest. The crops sown during the winter season is astrologically judged from the Vrishabh Samkranti chart. The great Varahamihira in his monumental work Brihat Samhita has mention about it in the 39th Chapter ‘Saysyajataka’. As per Varahamihira the benefic planet in kendra (1,4,7 and 10) houses from Sun at the time of Sun’s entry into Scorpio are good for winter harvest. Here in the chart of solar ingress of Scorpio the strong Moon is in the 7th house. However, the conjunction of Mercury and Saturn with the Sun also indicate the losses of crops due to heavy rainfall and wind storms.

The intense rainfall activity in the state of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka will bring floods in many parts during the second week of November. The Saturn would be in Navamsha of Capricorn and Jupiter would be in the Navamsha of Cancer both in watery Navamsha. This is an indication of extremely heavy rainfall activity in the second week of November this year. The city of Chennai and Pondicherry will be flooded then.

There will be some more rain on the new Moon of 29th of November which will continue for 2 days. Moon will then join Saturn and Sun in Scorpio. Mercury will enter into Sagittarius joining Venus and bringing more rain. Venus Joining Mars will bring more rain

On the 3rd of December Venus will enter into Makar (Capricorn) to join Mars over there. It will bring more rain in the state of Tamil Nadu in particular. Mars will then be receiving the close degree aspect of Jupiter from Virgo and Saturn from Scorpio. This is a dangerous combination of heavy rainfall.

On the 11th of December the Mars will move into Aquarius sign. There will be some rain then. However, later when Sun will move into Sagittarius on the 15th of December the rainfall activity will start decreasing. The overall rainfall will be higher than the normal during the north-west monsoon season this year.
