The almanac or Panchangs made by Hindu astrologers have been giving weather forecast since centuries. These Panchangs used the principals of astro-meteorology given in the classics of Medini Jyotish (Mundane Astrology) for making predictions about rain and other seasonal trends. But most of the ancient classics like Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira , Bhadra Bahu Samhita, Adhbhut Sagar and Vashisht Samhita have mainly given the atmospheric observations for forecasting rainfall. These books have not talked much about planetary combinations responsible for giving or obstructing rainfall.
However, the later works in the 19th century like Bhavishya Phala Bhaskara and Varsha Prabodha have given lots of planetary yogas for judging rainfall, drought, scarcity of water etc. Since last couple of years i have been mainly using the astrological combinations given in these two books along with the Mayur Chitram which is another very good Hindi book on Medini Jyotish. Based on these classical principal i was able to predict the drought and record breaking heat in the months of April and May this year. In my articles published in the April 2016 issue of “The Planet & Forecast” and “Express Star Teller” magazines , i had given forecast about the record breaking heat waves and drought like situation in India.
The astrological basis of this prediction was the retrogression of Saturn and Mars in Scorpio sign. The long stay of Mars with Saturn is a combination of dryness and heat. Adding to the misery the Saturn’s 10th aspect on the Jupiter, which is currently transiting in fiery sign Leo, is making new records of rising temperature. The mutual aspect of Sun, Mars and Saturn across the Taurus-Scorpio axis from the 14th of May to 14th of June will not going to let any relief to the people of north and central India from the gusty heat waves. See the chart of the solar ingress of Taurus given below.
Sun’s entry into Taurus or Vrishabha Samkranti
14 May 2016 at 16:42, Delhi
The Vrishabha Samkranti chart has been recommended by great Varahamihira in his Brihat Samhita for assessing the Kharif crops which are sow in the summer season. As per Varahamihira if at the time of Sun’s entry into Vrishabha (Taurus) the Sun is under the influences of hard malefic planets then it shows the possibility of destruction of crops. Here in the Vrishabha Samkrani chart the Sun is under the influences of Saturn and Mars in both the Rashi chart and the Navamsha. It is a clear combination of the loss of Kharif crops which may happen due to delay in the south-west monsoon and an erratic rainfall.
As per a classical text Bhavishya Phala Bhaskara the Saturn-Mars combination gives erratic rain which destroy houses and crops of farmers. I have discuss about it in detail in my article “Trends of South-West Monsoon” published in the June 2016 issue of Express Star Teller magazine.
When will south-west monsoon enter Kerala?
The normal date for the onset of south-west monsoon is 1st of June when it is expected to strike at the Kerala coast. But this is year the monsoon express is likely to get delay again and it may reach at the Kerala coast only after the New Moon of 5th of June. At the time of New Moon on 5th of June the Venus would be in Taurus along with Sun and in mutual aspect with malefic Mars and Saturn. The Jupiter would be in Leo under the 10th aspect of Saturn.
Saturn’s close degree aspect on the watery planet Jupiter and Venus is a very dangerous combination which may bring a very server drought in many parts of the country due to delay in south-west monsoon rain. { In astro-meteorology the Saturn, Mars and Sun are dry planets. The Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Moon are watery planets. }
The draught stricken Vidarbha, Telangana and Bundelkhand region will be the worst affected due to intense heat wave and delay in south-west monsoon rains. The southern Gujarat and Northern Maharashtra signified by Leo sign will also come under the effect of sever heat waves and drought.
Due to affliction to the Scorpio and Taurus axis by malefic planets the pre-monsoon rain will be very deficient in the month of June in northern states. The Scorpio sign signifies Delhi-NCR and the Taurus signifies the Bihar and central parts of India. The affliction to this axis by malefic Saturn and Mars is bad for the farmers in general.
The ground water level has already been very low in the Punjab and Haryana due to the poor south-west monsoon in the last two year. The delays in monsoon this year may bring sever drought in this region. This may result into scarcity of drinking water for the humans and deficiency of fodder for the animals in most parts of the country during the month of June.
Now see the Ardra Pravesh chart for this year for more deeper analysis.
Sun’s entry into Ardra
21 June 2016 at 23:00 hours at Delhi
In the Ardra Pravesh chart the Aquarius a dry sign is rising in the Rashi chart and in Navamsha it is Sagittarius a fiery sign which is not a welcome sign for the rainfall. The two benefic planets Jupiter and Mercury are in Kendra but they are under the aspect of a dry planet Saturn. The Moon is in Sagittarius rashi which is a dry sign not good for rain. In Navamsha the influences of malefic planets on the ascendant shows that there will be a draught like situation in the country as a whole.
The scarcity of rain and a war like situation may bring the prices of food grain very high during the summer of 2016. As per the classics of astro-meteorology the Mars in Scorpio brings fight among the rulers and the price of food grains tends to be on the higher side because of this effect. See this classical maxim in this regards.
Yada Vrischikrashisatho Jayate Cha Mahisuta
Mahaghar Sarvadravyana Nripani Kopanadishet
{Reference: Page number 53 of Bhavishya Phala Bhaskara , published by Venketeshwara Press Mumbai }
English Translation: When Mars transit through Scorpio sign the prices of all commodities start increasing and there will be jealousy and anger among the kings.
It will be after the Full moon of 4th of July when some relief from the draught is likely to visible due to some rainfall. The conjunction of Moon, Mercury, and Venus along with Sun in the Gemini sign on the 4th of July may bring some rainfall in many parts of the country. The south-west monsoon will also knock the door of Delhi-NCR around this time. The conjunction of two benefic planets in transit gives rains as per the classical maxims.
Smagate Sita Budhyosatha Cha Guru-Shukarayo
Tathava Jeeva-Budhyovrishti Syanatra Sanshaya
English Translation: If Venus and Mercury are in one rashi or Jupiter and Mercury or Venus and Jupiter are transiting in one rashi then there will be rain without any doubt.

Chances of good rain in the second fortnight of July
On the 7th of July the Venus entering into the watery sign Cancer sign will bring rain in many parts of the country. The Mercury will also join Venus in Cancer sign on the 11th of July which will then bring flood in the central and eastern parts of the country. On the July 27th the Mercury will enter into Leo to join another watery planet Jupiter there. This will bring some much needed rain in the Gujarat and Maharashtra region to give some relief for the draught stricken farmers. Later on the 1st of August the Venus will enter into Leo to join Mercury and Jupiter there. This combination will bring heavy rain in many parts of the country in the first week of August.
At the time of the Full Moon on the 3rd of August the conjunction of Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in Leo will give much needed rainfall during this fortnight. However, the lunation in watery sign Cancer also shows the chances of floods in many parts of the country. The Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat region will be affected by flood during this fortnight.
Jupiter entering into Virgo on the 11th of August will give boost to the south-west monsoon rainfall. The watery planet Jupiter getting separated from the aspect of dry planet Saturn will be a good sign for the rainfall. Later the Saturn will become direct on the 14th of August to bring some heavy rainfall in the northern states in particular. The good rainfall in the month of August will bring some relief for the farmers though it will not be able to compensate fully the loss because of delay in sowing the seeds of Kharif crops because of draught in the months of June and July.
On the 26th of August Venus will come into Virgo sign where it will be in conjunction with Mercury and Jupiter there. It will bring good rainfall in the southern peninsula as the Virgo sign signifies the south direction. This will bring some good relief for the farmers of Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
On the 9th of September the Mercury will come back to Leo in the retrograde motion. As per Bhavishya Phala Bhaskar when Mercury leave the Venus in retrograde motion then it will give heavy rain continuously for 5 or 7 days. See the classical reference in this regard.
Unnmargaman Kritya Yada Shukra Tyajyabudha
Tada Varshati Panchjanyo Dinani Sapta Vaa
English Translation: When Mercury left the conjunction with Venus and move into a previous sign after getting retrograde then it may give rain for about 5 to 7 days continuously. { Bhavishya Phala Bhaskara Page number 32 , stanza number 32}
On the 19th of September the Venus will move into Libra. This will make the transiting Sun from Virgo sign to get sandwiched between Mercury in Leo and Venus transiting from Libra. When Sun gets sandwiched between Mercury and Venus then it stops the rainfall. See the below given classical stanza.
Buddha-Bhriguvomadhyagata Suryajalashoshaka
Tayoadi Sameepasatha Bahujalaprada
English Translation: When Sun transit in between Mercury and Venus then it obstruct rainfall. However, when it come closer to Mercury and Venus then it gives lots of rain.
{ Mayur Chitram , Page number 100, Publish by Parimal Publication}
Thus the monsoon will start withdrawing from the northern states immediately after the 19th of September. Although there will be some good rainfall in the last fortnight of September in the states like Chhattisgarh and Orissa due to this retreating monsoon.
The overall rainfall may well be just below the 90% of the long period average. There will be deficient rainfall in the months of June and July. In the month of August, especially after 11th of August when Jupiter will move into Virgo, there will be good rainfall. But the good rainfall in the month of August will not be able to compensate for the draught in June and July months. Thus India may have to suffer a 3rd concussive year when there will be less than normal rainfall in its south-west monsoon season resulting into big losses of Kharif season crops.
